When does a site need to report to the National Pollutant Inventory?

If a facility located in Australia undertakes activity that is shown in this list and an NPI Emission Estimation Technique Manual has been published for the relevant industry sector, the facility is legally obligated to report to the NPI if any of the following occurs over a 12 month period:

• 400 tonnes or more of fuel or waste is burned;
  
  
• 1 tonne or more of fuel or waste is burned during any hour (this can include a single explosive blast);
  
  
• 10 tonnes or more of any of these NPI substances are used (sortable spreadsheet);
  
  
• 25 tonnes or more of Total Volatile Organic Compounds is used (TVOC can comprise these NPI substances and any others meeting the TVOC definition);
  
  
• 5 kilograms or more of mercury is used; or
  
  
• 15 tonnes or more of nitrogen or 3 tonnes or more of phosphorus is emitted to water or land or transferred to a waste destination.
